At the state memorial service for Judith Durham, held on September 6, 2022, at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, her sister, Beverley Sheehan, delivered an emotional tribute that resonated deeply with attendees and viewers alike. As the only sibling of the late lead singer of The Seekers, Beverley shared poignant memories of their close bond and musical beginnings.
Beverley recalled their childhood duets, often singing early in the morning until their father would intervene, saying, “That’s enough, your mother can’t sleep.” She also highlighted Judith’s first recording at 19 with Frank Traynor’s Jazz Preachers, describing the song “Jelly Bean Blues” as “the most beautiful song” on the EP. Accompanied by The Syncopators, Beverley performed this piece during the service, paying tribute to her sister’s early jazz roots.
The memorial service also featured musical tributes from various artists, including The Seekers, who played an unreleased song titled “Carry Me,” written by band member Bruce Woodley. Additionally, performances by Dami Im, Vika and Linda Bull, and Deborah Cheetham added to the emotional atmosphere of the evening.
